Barrow appoints new army commander

President Adama Barrow has appointed Colonel Ousman Gomez as Commander of the Gambia National Army, replacing General Mamat Cham, who is now promoted deputy Chief of Defence Staff.

Until his promotion, Col Gomez was the Force Provost Marshal (Military Police head) and legal adviser to the CDS.
He is currently preparing to defend his second master’s degree thesis on peace and conflict resolution at International Christian University in Japan.

Meanwhile, Commander-in-Chief Barrow has also appointed Colonel Turo Jawneh as Commander of the Republican National Guards. He was the Commanding Officer of the State Guards Battalion before his promotion.

The former director of training and doctrine at the Defence Headquarters, Colonel Sait Njie has been promoted the new Commander of the State Guards Battalion.

“The appointment of these senior officers to the enviable positions is part of the security sector reforms. The Gambia Armed Forces would like to express its gratitude to the president for filling the vacant positions in the armed forces. This is a clear testimony of His Excellency’s ardent desire to transform GAF into a more robust and formidable force,” GAF spokesman Major Lamin Sanyang said in a statement.
